Introduction

Among the 50 states, Alaska is near the top of the gun ownership list with more than half the citizens owning firearms. Wyoming, Alaska and Montana are at the top. Alaskans use firearms for target shooting, competitions, personal protection and protection from dangerous wildlife like bears.

Alaska Shooting Ranges

The State of Alaska contributed to the development of many shooting ranges in Alaska in the 1980's. There are now a number of well developed ranges in the state, especially on the road system where user numbers are highest.

Southeast Alaska

Wrangell Outdoor Shooting Range is located on the Spur Road past the Golf Course Facilities: The range has two target shooting areas and a skeet shooting site for self-launched clay pigeons. Operated by the City of Wrangell Parks & Recreation Department There is also a 50' indoor shooting range that is located in the Public Safety Building (431 Zimovia Highway). During winter months the Parks and Recreation Department has open shooting for air rifles, .22 rifles and handguns two nights per week. There is a small fee to use this facility and loaner .22 rifles, ammo and targets are available.

Interior Alaska

Fairbanks:

The Hunter Education Indoor Shooting Range located at 1300 College Road in Fairbanks has posted Public Shooting Hours for the 2007-2008 season.

• Monday Closed for walk-in public shooting hours (school rifle teams and hunter education classes use the range)
• Tuesday Closed for walk-in public shooting hours (school rifle teams and hunter education classes use the range)
• Wednesday 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. (league shooting is from 7:00 p.m. to 10 p.m.)
• Thursday 5:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m.
• Friday 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. (league shooting is from 7:00 p.m. to 10 p.m.)
• Saturday 1:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. * (on 4th Sat. of the month, hours are 1-4 and 6-9 p.m. to accommodate hunter education use)
• Sunday 1:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m.

UPCOMING .22 BULLSEYE PISTOL LEAGUE At 7 p.m. Friday, September 28th, there will be an organizational meeting for the next .22-caliber bullseye pistol league, at the range. A practice match will be held the following week. Registration for the league is open and there are still open slots on the league.
