Boating

Introduction

Recreational boating in Alaska covers a range of activities, including air boating, canoeing, kayaking, power boating, hunting including float hunting and rafting. Boats of all kinds are used on marshes, creeks, rivers, lakes, ocean bays and fjords and even off shore.

Alaska Waterways

Alaska inland waterway information is increasing, but still limited. While some waterways are heavily used, others are seldom traveled because of their remoteness. The Alaska River Logs, although now somewhat dated, are a useful source of information for many Alaska rivers.

Boat Launching Facilities

Boats can be launched in many road connected areas. Here is a partial list of Alaska boat launching facilities. Most of the facilities have "loaner" life vests on site as part of the Kids Don't Float program.[1] Launch fees are collected and used by the Alaska Division of Parks and Natural Resources to maintain the ramps and parking areas. [2] The launch fee is normally $5 or $10 per launch. Annual parks day use and launch passes are available along with other valuable boating information at the above links.

Tides

Tidal fluctuations in some areas of Alaska are among the world's largest. For example, approximately 30 foot (10 m) tides are the norm in parts of Cook Inlet. Tide books are available at no cost in many coastal communities. See also the Online tide tables, below.
