Introduction

In days not long ago, Alaskans crossed the country in whatever motorized contrivances were available. "Cat trains" crossed the country in the winter and all kinds of all terrain vehicles followed trails or simply open country where possible.

Today, most cross country travel is confined to defined trails. These trails follow the best routes and protect un-reached country from damage. They make possible deep penetration into roadless areas for all kinds of outdoor recreation.

Many of these are shared trails used by hikers, horses, and ATVs. Courtesy among all user groups will make possible good relationships between all.

Interior Alaska Trails

The Stampede Trail runs west from the George Parks Highway to the boundary of Denali National Park. Motorized transportation is restricted in the park.
